Lately, I visited a sunflower field in New Jersey. Some flowers were blooming, while others were withered with seeds, but every stage felt full of intensity.

I painted a few pieces, working in a very loose way—less about capturing themselves, and more about capturing the feeling and impression of it: the shades, the shadows, the light, and the movement.

I finally varnished The Way Home, and looking back at these moments from the painting process.

It’s the only view from the train that you can see from the right side—the view I would see on my way home. That’s how the painting got its name, The Way Home.

And those lights glowing through the rain have always felt spiritual and nostalgic to me.

I’m excited that The Way Home will be part of Unveiled26 by @studiotoursoma , on view at the Herb + Milly Iris Gallery at @sopacnow .

I finally varnished The Way Home, and looking back at these moments from the painting process.

Some of my horse paintings at my studio.

I’ve never been away from my studio this long. I miss my little area, but I’m also loving this total immersion in everything else—traveling, experiencing, and just letting my mind wander without constantly thinking about painting.

What a dilemma. 😂

Maybe stepping out of my tiny studio is part of the creative process too, and coming back with fresh eyes.

Throwing it back to the progress of Her Garden (oil on canvas, 36” × 24”.

This summer, I’m visiting Chengdu, China. I’ve especially enjoyed revisiting the Taoist mountains and temples. It’s fascinating to experience them with a new perspective—I appreciate the culture, history, and art so much more than I did on my last visit, which was before the devastating Sichuan earthquake nearly 20 years ago.

I’m soaking in every moment and embracing all the inspiration for future paintings.

Her Garden was built through many layers of paint and texture. Even now, I can still imagine new possibilities and directions I could take it.

It’s the last week to see Her Garden on view in Golden Hour at CINC @creativeincommonorg through this weekend.
