Along with the three smaller sunflower paintings in oil, I also painted a larger, more detailed one.

Up close, the brushstrokes are just shapes. Step back, and they begin to make sense. These sunflowers are on fire! Their hues shift throughout the daylight, and almost burning my eyes.

“We the People” — a visual interpretation of the 250-year experiment in democracy. Now showing at Leach Gallery (641 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, NJ) by @studiomontclair through October 23.

I’m honored that my painting, Mother II, was selected for this exhibition.

Through this serious, I reflect on humanity and our relationship with Mother Earth. After so much war, and destruction on our planet, the figure kneels before the motherland, embodying human guilt, regret, and a longing for reflection and forgiveness.

I painted this one in 2022, a moment to acknowledge the sins.

This summer, I went back to China after more than a decade away and spent some wonderful time in Sichuan, where I grew up.

But I didn’t get to visit western Sichuan (川西）, with its Tibetan culture and breathtaking mountain landscapes. So I let my brushes take me there.

I imagined myself flying high above the mountains, taking in the view as the sun was setting. The prayer flags（经幡）on the peaks were flying so strongly that, they turned into abstract shapes.

Sometimes painting can take me to another places.

Some of my favorite watercolor paintings.

Watercolor is such a fluid, relaxing, and versatile medium. I love the way it flows, surprises me, and leaves room for spontaneous changes.
