Today is the Lantern Festival, which marks the last day of the CNY. Earlier this year, I had the great opportunity to be interviewed by @johnelliotttv from CBS about the artworks I created for the Lunar Fest NJ. I am so honored to be part of the team. It was such a privilege to creat the zodiac paintings, and it was one of the most enjoyable experiences, definitely a remarkable way to start the new year.

The Lunar Fest NJ 2025 was a big event in Maplewood, and I want to thank our devoted volunteers and committee for delivering such an amazing event to our community year after year. The director is @lyc_citygirl. You can watch full TV program clips about Lunar Fest NJ at @somacrossculturalworks.

This painting is my metaphor, expressing my sympathy for children in this world. A baby crawls by the window, gazing out at the “quiet and beautiful” sunrise over a snowy village. However, flames are falling, and inside the house, the candlestick are burning, merging with the outside sky—nowhere is safe, even if it appears quiet.

I painted these three snake-themed paintings before the New Year. The first one is abstract, the second one is surrealism, and the third one is speculative art. They were an experiment, and I had fun exploring through the process.

They are all mixed media, with oil on top of acrylic. With layers of pigment and thought, I added my decisions over time, rethinking and rebuilding, like a snake shedding its skin. May this Year of the Snake bring endless life for rebirth and renewal. To the precious life

My artwork was inspired by Chinese Bronze Age culture. I’ve always been fascinated by the bold outlines of the bronze casting industry, and I aimed to combine that with the flowing form of a snake. To me, it’s cultural, unique, and nostalgic

I started painting a few snake-themed paintings over the winter break. This one is by far the most challenging for me because I didn’t have a reference photo; everything was done by thinking and guessing. There were so many uncertain moments and back-and-forth decisions.

I had this idea of incorporating the shape of a snake into the vastness of nature. Here, I‘ve placed it in the middle of a valley, with the body forming the shape of the Chinese character “生”(Shēng), which means ’life‘ and ’lively‘—symbolizing endless life and growth （生生不息）. The lower part represents a pond or river, while the upper part rises toward the sun.

It all started with layers of acrylic paint, metallic spray, and various other mediums, followed by additional layers of oil paint. I hope this painting will be finished soon.

Here are some of my paintings on the wall at home, and I’ve been enjoying them since I painted them a couple of years ago. They are flashes of old memories and moments in my life—some are from my hometown, and some are from my trips.

Though those moments are gone, these paintings always remind me of the good times and what happened. That‘s the power of art: that moment can become eternity. I also feel that I could expand any of them into a series.

After many hours, I’m glad this painting is closer to being finished 😊. It took so long because I added the light myself. I wanted to capture the golden hour with this warm, peaceful village. This place is real and located near me. If you know it, you know it; if not, now you do.

It was such an amazing night at the Montclair Art Museum @mammontclair for the annual fundraiser event Art Uncorked. It was my pleasure to be involved, especially with one particular painting I inspired and created for the theme. The sunrise, sunset, and colors are always captivating to me, as they represent the shifting of time from the horizon.

One of the guests commented that the colorful brushwork felt like popping party confetti, while another mentioned that the front tree looked like a Christmas tree celebration. I was amazed by how people interpreted and connected with the painting. I absolutely enjoyed the evening, speaking with and meeting the guests, as well as other wonderful artists. I‘m also glad that this painting has found a new home.

To me, painting has always been a solo lonely practice. Whenever I get a chance, I meditate in front of my easel, losing track of time in an effort to push against it. I didn’t realize that group collaboration could be so much fun.

Earlier this month I did @studiotoursoma and wow thank you for the wonderful opportunity to connect with the audience—it feels powerful when art brings people together. Thanks to the organizers, my fellow artists, and all the visitors. I truly enjoyed the company! Also glad some of my paintings and prints found new homes.

This week, I started painting three floral paintings, all taking a partial or different angle from my old painting. I love the blocking in moments, and doing three at the same time is so fun! I am going to finish those soon; hopefully, they just need a few final touches..

I was so excited to see that my painting Hawk‘s Tavern was featured in the article about the @studiotoursoma in the fall 2024 issue of Matters magazine @mattersmagazine. (I will be showing at the 1978 Arts Center)

As a self-taught artist, I am thankful for our community‘s support. The SOMA studio tour provides great opportunities for artists to grow, really connect everyone and the community, and I am so glad to be a part of it.

I also painted quite a few about this area. I live here and see places every day; there is no better way to express my feelings than by painting them.

It’s the season of dahlia flowers, and they are in full bloom. From the buds to the blossoms and then to withering, they symbolize the cycle of vibrant vitality.

I intentionally included the dried dahlias in front of Namcha Barwa, a Himalayan mountain. They celebrate the great cycle of life and death.

I haven’t visited China in 10 years. When I was there, I didn’t find the Chinese garden very inspiring; it felt too calm for me, or maybe I was just used to that type of view. However, this summer, during a casual visit to the Montreal Botanical Garden, the Chinese garden truly struck me: the simple elements composed beautiful scenes. With every angle I observed and every step I took, the view changed, like unrolling a scroll of landscape painting—I felt as if I were inside a painting!

With just a pond, stones, trees, and architecture, it’s an ideal model of Chinese aesthetics, balancing harmony between humanity and nature.

It enlightened me, and I expressed this inspiration in my painting. It’s not finished yet; the beginning was fun, full of expression and freedom, with endless possibilities. Now I need to end it. I’ve paused for a few days to just stare at it.
